Graduate Research Opportunities



Degree Requirements:

Requirements for the degree include 36 credit hours, consisting of:

Four Core courses (12 credit hours):
  • MATH 7231, Advanced Numerical Analysis I
  • MATH 5332, Analysis II
  • MATH 5335, Intermediate Linear Algebra
  • STAT 5531, Statistical Methods I
Six Elective courses (18 credit hours): 

Elective courses include approved courses in Math, Statistics and CS.  All but two elective courses must be in the area of concentration.  At least four courses (core and elective) must be at the level 7000 or above.*  Additional course information.

Research (3 credit hours):
Thesis (3 credit hours):

Each student must conduct research in their area of concentration, write a thesis, and pass an oral defense.  Students work with a faculty member, who serves as project director (see Math/Statistics or CS for faculty research areas).  Additional project information.

* The College of Graduate Studies requires 18 of the 36 credits (half) at the level 7000 or above, including the 6 research credits, leaving 12 for courses.

Admission

For regular admission to the College of Graduate Studies to pursue work leading to this degree, the applicant must have:
  1. Completed requirements for the Bachelor's Degree in a Science, Engineering, or Mathematical discipline at an accredited college or university.
  2. Provided scores from the Graduate Record Examination to the College of Graduate Studies with other admissions documents.
  3. Successfully completed courses in Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra and Probability.
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in a computer programming language.
  5. Special Prerequisites include:

Graduate Assistantships: 

Graduate Assistantships are offered on a competitive basis.  Typical duties include coordinating and assisting in our Computer labs.  Graduate assistants must be registered for a minimum of nine credit hours of graduate course work, of which 6 hours must count toward their degree.
